need some help!!

can someone please give me some advice, I am unable to use the command dial at all to select the different flash modes, apperture and continuous shooting. I have read and read the manual again and am still unable to ge the command dial to select the function I want. I undersatnd you you have to hold the relevant button down for the function you want to change, however, the command dial does not change the setting at all on all three buttons. Any advice?...
